Fourth is King Photo Essay & 5 Questions with Photographer annecynn

Tell us about yourself: What’s your name, where are you from and what do you do? The only person in the world who calls me Annie is my younger brother. But it’s normally just Anne. I grew up in a small town called Foothill Ranch, Southern California most of my life until I was 18. FR rests at the bottom of a mountain, tucked away about 20 miles from the closest highway to even get out of town. It’s funny, if you look at a map, my hometown is shaped like a womb. And I never really left it until college where I studied fine art – drawing and painting.

1. 2 Part Question: How did you get into Photography? And how has Instagram impacted your photography work?

My last semester in college, I went online and spontaneously booked a one-way ticket to Prague, Czech Republic. One of my favorite novelists at the time was residing in Europe, and ever since I had read his first novel in high school, I knew I wanted to meet him one day, give him a great kiss and say thank you in Czech. Right after graduation, I left with one backpack and an iphone. And in the span of 3 months, I backpacked to over 35 countries, met so many beautiful people, and had taken over 10,000 photos on my iphone. None of the photos turned out to be quality photos, but all of them were of quality moments that made a lasting impression on my life in some way.

Travel helped me discover my obsession with photography, and Instagram acted as a vehicle to share with people what I was doing with my life. The Instagram community is special to me; it’s been a way to document transformation, honesty, encourage transparency, and to make connections with total strangers who are planning out their dreams, actualizing them and figuring it out as they go.

2. Name your dream project/client?

At the end of this year, I embark on my 7 continent-backpacking trek, where I will travel to and document my adventure. Whether I make it to all continents within a specific time frame or geographic order doesn’t matter to me. It’s the idea of traveling without an objective, a mission, a said purpose, a time frame and set of goals that really interests me. I’m deeply curious as to what happens when you roam freely.

3. What inspires and influences your work?

I’m going to attempt to answer this question with a few quotes that speak into my life and influence my work:

"I was always hungry for love. Just once, I wanted to know what it was like to get my fill of it - to be fed so much love I couldn’t take it anymore. Just once."

"Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the question when you are the answer.”

And, “If a story is in you, it has to come out.”

4. Describe your work in 3 words or less.

hunger

5. What’s your favorite place you have traveled to? Why is it your favorite?

Eastern Europe. Because of 1) the people, and how their history is alive with them in the present. 2) Their waterfalls and forests, evidence that if any good can come from war, it’s hope and healing.
